Kristy McNally serves as the NSTEP Coordinator for Newport’s Services, Tools, & Empowerment Program, supporting students and families across the district. Kristy was invited to be a guest speaker at Newport School of Innovation.

In her role, she helps connect students with essential school and community resources, including Stock-the-Kitchen, where families can access free groceries and household items. She also ensures that students have what they need to feel comfortable and confident at school by providing clothing, hygiene products, and other basic necessities.

Kristy explained that her position is funded through the McKinney-Vento Act, a federal program designed to support students experiencing housing instability or homelessness. This funding enables her to offer individualized assistance, remove barriers to education, and help students remain engaged in school.

Overall, Kristy’s work strengthens the support network available to Newport families and ensures that every student has the tools they need to succeed.

Students recently visited Off Tha Top Barber Shop, a local business, to learn first-hand what it takes to succeed in the barbering profession. The barbers welcomed them warmly and immediately created an atmosphere where questions were encouraged.

During the visit, students learned about the technical craft of cutting hair, from mastering tools to developing a signature style. The barbers also explained how saving money and managing finances are essential parts of running or working in a shop. Students gained insight into building a loyal clientele and the importance of good communication and customer service.

The barbers discussed the schooling, training, and licensing required to enter the field, offering practical advice for anyone considering the trade.

The experience was motivating and gave students a realistic and inspiring look at career opportunities in barbering.

In honor of Veterans Day, the Newport School of Innovation welcomed two veterans who shared their experiences and insights with students. Mr. Paul Kunkel represented the United States Marine Corps, while Mr. Barry Shields represented the United States Army. They spoke about the values of service, responsibility, and teamwork that are integral to military life. The veterans provided students with a glimpse into their experiences in the Marines and the Army, answering questions about duty, sacrifice, and leadership.

Both veterans emphasized the importance of making wise choices, both in school and in life, to build a strong foundation for the future. Their visit served as a reminder of the courage, integrity, and dedication displayed by those who serve our country.
